Correct The Faults In Your Teams

Project teams contain different levels of knowledge sets, personalities, egos, outlooks, attitudes, and thought patterns. Teams that are put together contain members that are aligned with the project focus, and you also have those that will derail the project management best practices and efforts of others. Project managers need to keep team members on track and bring resolutions to projet problems within the team.

If there is a conflict between two teammates, it is the leader who must bring resolution to the individuals in question. Whether it is a personal matter, difference in beliefs, or they just act like oil and water, the leader has to step in with answers. Does it mean one or the other is removed from the team? If need be, yes. Even if both must be removed, the project has to move forward. Ignoring the problem, thinking two grown ups in a work environment can settle things on their own, only causes an escalating problem towards eventual volatility.

Sometimes it is the project manager who is hindering team and project progress. Will the project manager accept constructive criticism? Will it take a voice towards the manager above the project manager to bring a resolution? Communication and feedback is needed if the leader is performing under standards. Leaving the underperforming leader in place results in finger pointing when the realization of project failure begins to surface.

Conversely, if it is senior management holding back the project, there are processes that can be followed to earn their project buy-in. Coming from a different direction, selling the project in a different way, and settling for an agreed compromise may get the project green light. If not, it is entirely possible the sinking ship needs to progress forward without you.

A team member that is completely clueless and wants to run independent of the team and the leader will ruin the efforts of the team. There is the gentle, warm and fuzzy, touchy-feel approach, and the tough love, this is how it has to be approach. Either way, change is necessary. The out of control team member has to get with the program, or find themselves sitting alone apart from the project. The offending digit must be ex-communicated to save the hand.

These lessons to be learned are part of a solid training course. PMP training is needed by team members and project managers, to keep their skills sharp and on task.
