As in other areas of progress, when civilization moves forward, you can always count on someone taking advantage of another individual to make a fast buck or swindle them from their hard earned assets. No matter how smart or educated you might think you are, if you do not display an amount of common sense and awareness, you will eventually become another casualty.
The Information Technology section of the FBI acknowledges scammers continue to devise newer and more sophisticated methods to commit fraud. Between the years 2001 to 2009, complaints to the Internet Crime Complaint Center reporting Internet crime have increased by a factor of 667.8 percent. Some of the more popular scams follows:
Everyone has come across the annoying popup advertisements for anti-virus solutions. Some flashing Java script alerts you to a proliferation of nasty viruses, bugs and spyware on your system and you need to immediately handle the situation. Of course, when you click on the popup, the real nasty code is downloaded to your system. Part two is the direction to buy the advertised anti-virus application to clean your system. Now you really get hit with key loggers, more viruses, Trojans and other malware. The FBI reports anti-virus scams have netted over one hundred fifty million in the year 2009. If you encounter one of these popups, close down your browser and run a real anti-virus application, just in case of infection. And set your browser to block popups.
Another popular scheme is the ‘Hitman’. Someone contacts the unsuspecting individual, threatening to kill or kidnap a loved one if thousands upon thousands of dollars isn’t delivered within a certain time frame. The person being scammed is expected to send a wire transfer at a certain time. In the scam email, personal information of the unsuspecting individual is usually given to add credence and legitimacy. Also, individuals of officials or business professionals is sometimes included in the email to add a level of validity. Usually the money being requested is supposed to be wired to a foreign country.
The government stimulus program has been a favorite target. Certain federal funds have supposedly been set aside for anyone who qualifies. A prerecorded phone message with a voice sounding like the President has been reported to have been used, as the person being scammed is directed to a website requesting personal information in order to receive the funds. And hurry, time is limited! Of course, the receiver has to send a fee to guarantee they will receive their part of the pot. The FBI reports ‘Operation Short Change’ included a law enforcement program that included fifteen Federal Trade Commission cases, forty four Department of Justice enforcement actions, and thirteen states taking action against scammers with schemes of non-existing job promises, get rich quick systems, false federal grants, debt reductions, and credit/debit unauthorized charges.
As old as water, the astrological reading by a psychic still exists. The unsuspecting person provides birth information for a free reading, with purchase offers of a full reading as something great and positive is about to happen in the near future. The believing target pays full price for a reading they never obtain.
The work from home scams are still in full force. Different job positions are posted on web sites, with offers including secret shoppers, office managers, survey takers and more. The target individual is given instructions to provide personal information, as high wages are due to come with the new position. Sometimes the offer of computer hardware and software is offered to perform the task. Some of these scams even send money orders or checks to be cashed, and a request is made to send a portion of the money to a third party location with the individual’s own personal checking account, money order or cash. Some scams include an employer-employee survey. The ones that are asked to send a copy of their own payroll check as proof of employment later find their personal checking accounts emptied of thousands of dollars through the use of bad or counterfeit checks, with no way to recover the money.
