Security Software Shouldn’t Be Your Only Defense

Their report states, "The larger result of our report is a revelation for our security environment."

Their testing environment executed on an around the clock, twenty four hour basis for a total of nine days. As stated by NSS Labs, "We've peformed our research and testing just like the hackers. With as many as fifty thousand new malware platforms discovered every day, it only takes the weakest part of your security plans to allow one of them to infiltrate the crack and do its damage. Once it is in, left attended, it can propagate itself and create more damage. Without protection or a good back-up system, your data is severely compromised. Remote areas of your network are fair game if their security does not meet adequate or better protection.

NSS Labs rated the performance of the security software they assessed, from software that did the job in a satisfactory manner and should be employed in a business or enterprise setting, to software that reasonably performed, to software that did not do the job and should not be used due to its poor response. Within their report, the security software vendors needed approximately forty six hours to stop a malicious site from intrusion and damage, if the site was stopped at all. If the software failed to stop a Web site the first time, the test was continued against the site on an eight hour basis to discover how long it would take for the security software to finally perform. The best software performed in just over four and a half hours to one vendor that took seventy one hours, to the worst performer clocking in at ninety two and a half hours. The ability to stop a site was dependent on how long the site was active. NSS Labs had a cut-off point where it determines whether a software vendor could bring a halt to new sites. The top performing software vendor was able to block a malicious site only sixty percent of the time, while the worst performers came in at forty four percent. If enterprises are purchasing software vendor solutions based on vendor marketing and advertising strategies, they are losing the fight against malware.
